January 21, 2007 - Made it to Penang

January 25, 2007
We finally made it to Penang ... it was a long trip due to delays and mechanical difficulties. We spent a night in Chicago and a night in Hong Kong so although we left on Sunday at 8am, we didn't arrive in Penang until Wednesday at 7pm!

We arrived well, and were fortunate to meet up with a friend of ours, Joe Drobnich, who had moved to Texas and we hadn't seen in 2 years. He was doing business in Kuala Lumpor and when we told him we were in Penang he flew to see us. We ate dinner with him at a beautiful colonial supper club, Bagan's, it was really nice.

I went to see our new house today. It is big and nice, and overlooking a golf course. The best part is that there are monkeys the size of large cats running through our back yard and the golf course just like squirrels back home. There is a huge children's park close by, and the monkeys there are the size of German Shepards ... We saw a family of about 20 just running around, crossing the street, one monkey had a baby the size of your hand just cling to her back! It is just awesome!

The city is geering up for the Hindu celebration Thaipusam on Jan 31-Feb2 where the Indian men apparently don't eat for several days and get in this trance and proceed to pierce their faces and skin with *large* needles ... since they are in this trance, they don't bleed ... They pierce their backs with huge fishing hooks and pull around these floats. Well the parades last all day for 3 days, while these pierced men walk up the mountain side dragging these floats carrying Hindu gods. I've seen pictures it's pretty extreme and impressive. I'll let you know how it goes... it looks like its going to be an interesting 2 years.
